With no animal control officer available to respond, West Hartford Police Officer Tom Lazure was on his own. Lazure was told after arriving at the scene by the dog’s owners said the animal gagged on a piece of rawhide and had stopped breathing. Using a doggy-modified Heimlich, Lazure compressed the Shih-Tzu’s chest. That was enough to dislodge the rawhide so Lazure could remove it from the animal’s throat. The dog, named Harry, resumed breathing shortly thereafter. After a quick trip to the veterinarian, Harry was reportedly in good health.
