My Colorado is $108 a year. How in the hell can you afford to live out there?

And how in the hell is California in such a budget hole? Good God, bunch of morons running the show out there.

It ain't no joke about the registration here. It is very expensive. When you have a pickup you have to get a "commercial" plate which jacks up the price a bunch. My 90 f250 is over twice as much as my 95 bronco because the bronco can have passenger plates

The average new car registration fee here in CA is somewhere between $300.00 and $400.00 .

I won't even get into what it costs in registration fees for a 18 wheeler. Trailer or Tractor. Lets just say it's astronomical.

Take a look at the plates on the rental truck fleets like Ryder, U-haul, etc. Most of those are licensed in Texas or Florida to keep the registration fees down. They only license the bare minimum amount here in CA and most of those vehicles are restricted to in state use. If you want to go out of state, they will find you a different truck with out of state plates.

There is a way around those wallet busting "commercial" fees. You can license your pick-up with passenger plates, but you have to install a camper shell or bed cover and never haul anything in the bed with it, outside of what you would put into a normal car trunk. The bed essentially becomes the trunk. Get caught and you get a big ticket, and possibly will have to re-register your truck as a "commercial" vehicle. I had a friend who was able to do this with a 97 Dakota. Thus the Pick-up essentially becomes a "passenger" vehicle.

With putting passenge plates on a pickup. You need the shell to be permanently mounted on it. If you ever get caught with a tool kit or helping you neighbor move or even pullin a trailer (according to some CHP guys I've met) you are in trouble and facing alot of fines and back fees. The state now has a hotline so people can report their neighbors for having out of state plates. If you want to get technical officers can ticket people on vacation in California if they have been in the state more then 10 days for not registering their vehickles in California (military exempt).

Somebody in Alaska slipped that by DMV. It was on a red Chevy pick up in Anchorage.

All of the U-Haul trucks up here have Arizona plates- apportioned.

That's retarded with pick ups. That's why I have a F250. To have 4x4, tow my camper, haul the dogs around, and haul outdoor gear so our Expedition doesn't get all mucked up. Heavy tint on the truck shell windows could help, but it wouldn't be worth it to risk the fees/fines.

Do people have Oregon or Nevada 'homes' and register their cars out of state?

Are motorcycles and campers (tow-along) expensive to register too? (Just curious.)

In Alaska I registered my camper as commercial to get a permanent plate (don't have to renew every 2 years like all other plates).

Holy shit. I think I pay in the $35 range yearly for my car, motorcycles are only $5 a year for plates. I think I'll stay where I'm at, I can afford to live legal here.

Depends. For example, I have been looking at buying a new Honda Silverwing. They typically run in the 8500.00 range. I plug in my county (Stanislaus), city (Ceres) and zip code (95307) and the registration fee runs about $168.00 a year. Taxes on that purchase price run $755.00 if I were to buy it.

Now, the 1966 Mustang that I used to own a little while back, the registration runs about $34.00 a year. I think I paid $1800 for it back in the mid 1980's.

My 2006 Focus that got repossessed 2 years ago would be $233.00 . I think we paid $26,000 for it new.

By camper I presume you are meaning a Recreational Vehicle trailer?

Here in CA we have what is called a PTI fee ( Permanent Trailer Identification ). Renewable every 5 years if you choose to enter your vehicle into that program.

With so many states making efforts to penalize texting while driving, etc., here comes CA with changing Ads on the license plates.

That figures, since most of the PTI tags that I have seen have been on commercial applications.

I could have sworn I saw one on an RV, perhaps I was mistaken.

I've seen it a couple of times on an RV. It was because DMV screwed up and has it listed as "utility" trailer
