In 18 years as a NG MP I was never called to the BX at Camp Roberts or San Luis Obispo for any thefts while serving as MP there. Took some officers in for DUI though at the Commanders direction.

The WalMart here is pretty good at getting involved. I observed a video of a female loss prevention officer detaining a high shoplifter that I've had a go with a few times. He became confrontational and was about to get physical and another loss prevention officer came up from behind, grabbed him and planted him on the floor. They just snatched him up and escorted him to the office where he was when we got there.

Same here. Everyonce in a while, we get a call from them about a suspect that fled from them in a car, on foot, etc. Usually though, they're clamped down if they get froggy, cuffed up, and brought to the AP office. By the time I get there, they've got receipts printed, statements done (they've got stacks of our PDs written statement forms), and surveillance DVDs burned. All I do is snag a case number, issue a ticket (or arrest if they have no valid ID), take the DVDs to book them in, take a photo of the merch, and provide them with a business card. They handle the rest.

Crap like this drives me nuts. Safeway/Randalls fired an employee the other day for chasing a purse snatcher out of the store.

I've heard that Home Depot is just as bad - A guy in one of my classes who worked in their Loss Prevetion department complained that he wasn't allowed to restrain anyone - all he could do is ask them nicely to wait around for the police.

His manager tried to tell him that it was Texas law, that only police could restrain a thief - But his manager didn't know he was about 80% on his way to being a cop himself, so he gave the manager an earfull about the things Texas law says ANYONE can do to a thief to recover property at night, especially

It didn't take him long to find a Loss Prevention job at Wal-Mart. They can chase and restrain people there.

So there MUST be a pro-criminal agenda there - not just preventing danger to their employees and customers, which is the usual excuse - Either pro-criminal, or they're just a bunch of f'ing cowards afraid to make their shoplifters angry.

Too bad The Gap doesn't carry my size so I can stop shopping there.

Same here. Loss Prevention at ours is a retired cop out of Florida who is also on our reserves. He doesn't take any shit and is really an asset to us.

We usually get at least 2 or 3 shoplifting cases a month sometimes more.

Come to think of it, I used to work at my local Wal-Mart. They don't mess around. Loss Prevention is tight and knows their stuff. I have seen my share of shoplifters taken out while working there on the graveyard shift. They will prosecute. Wal-Mart doesn't tolerate theft either.

i work secondary employment at a walmart just outside of baltimore city as uniformed police sitting at the door twiddling my thumbs. last month loss prevention aprehended 192 shoplifters, and prosecuted 50 or so. it was the 2nd most in the country behind some walmart out in texas... they prosecute all felonies (over $500) and misdemeanors with no id. they also prosecute misdemeanors if they run, fight, were previously placed on the banned list, or are just plain dicks. if they are not gonna prosecute, they photograph the offender, place them on the ban list, and send them on their way. if the offender has no id, they call police and have them arrested. i think they do it the right way.
