Fugitive robbery convict caught after 29 years on the run
It had been a long time since Robert Henry walked in shackles and handcuffs, 29 years to be exact. That was 29 years too long for police, who have been searching for him since he was convicted of robbery back in 1979.
On Monday, Henry was back in court older and grayer than he was the last time police saw him, but he was still the same in the eyes of the law; an escaped con who walked away from a work program while in prison in Nashville.
NEWS10 got an exclusive interview with Henry as he was being led away by police.
Police say Henry, a Vietnam veteran, fled from custody on June 10th, 1980. They know he spent some time since then in western New York and also possibly in the Syracuse area. More recently, however, Henry eked out a meager life for the last six years in Troy, working odd jobs and sometimes camping in city parks.
"Nobody knew nothing, not even my wife," he told NEWS10.
U.S. Marshalls will only say a tip led them to Henry, who was captured in an apartment building on Jefferson Street in Troy.
"He didn't give us a fight at all, he was a gentleman," said Troy Police Sgt. David Dean, "he was quite surprised, as it had been 29 years."
Geina Eldred, who lives in the apartment building where Henry was arrested, was shocked to hear of the arrest. Eldred says she knew Henry only as the maintenance man, but added he was always a nice guy.
Henry claims he's changed his ways since his original crime, using the quiet life he's led while on the run as an example.
"I'm a Christian, I go to church," Henry said, "I'm a great-grandfather."
Henry claimed to NEWS10 that he had been granted a pardon years ago by then-Tennessee Governor Ray Blanden and says he has no problem with the law.
When asked if escaping was worth it, he said, "Well sure, and I'm not going back - not without a fight."
A fight may be a lost cause, however, as NEWS10 has been told that Henry will likely be sent back to Tennessee to serve the remainder of his 15 year sentence, as well as extra charges he is now facing in Troy.

You can run, you can run, but you run to slow. The Police will catch you in a day or so!

Your tab is due , Mr.Henry..............
SI VIS PACEM PARA BELLUM-Ex-Sheriff Martin Howe to Will Kane in "High Noon"
"It's a great life. You risk your skin catching killers and the juries turn them loose so they can come back and shoot at you again. If your honest , your poor your whole life. And , In the end , you wind up dying all alone on some dirty street. For what? For nothing. For a tin star."
Far from being a handicap to command, compassion is the measure of it. For unless one values the lives of his soldiers and is tormented by their ordeals , he is unfit to command.

05-06-09, 03:37 PM #6Poor excuse, Mr Henry. They have church services in prison, if I am not mistaken. You can go if you are good and not put up a fight."I'm a Christian, I go to church," Henry said, "I'm a great-grandfather."
Mr. Henry should be glad that the Police finally caught him. There are consequences to his actions. Gives him a chance to repent of his ways in this life, rather than to wait until Judgment Day and have Heavenly Father confront him about his life and choices later.
