New Jersey Officer accidentally shoots his 6 year old son in the face with his duty weapon
A 6-year-old Deptford boy was shot in the face yesterday after a firearm that his police officer father was cleaning accidentally discharged.
The shooting happened about 4:10 p.m. outside a home on the 400 block of Trowbridge Road, a cul-de-sac in the Woodbury Gardens section of the township, said Bernie Weisenfeld, a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office.
The boy, whose name was not released, was transported to Cooper University Hospital in Camden, where he was undergoing treatment last night. Officials said the wound was not life-threatening.
Weisenfeld declined to identify the father and his son or divulge any details of the shooting "because of the sensitivity of the case."
The Major Crimes Unit of the Prosecutor's Office and the Deptford Police Department will investigate.
Authorities indicated that the father, identified as Wayne Muhlbaier by neighbors and through property records, works for the Deptford Police Department.
A Deptford police dispatcher last night declined to comment on how long Muhlbaier has been on the force, saying only that he was off last night.
The dispatcher referred all calls to the Prosecutor's Office.
On Trowbridge Road last night, police blocked off the street while neighbors gathered outside their one-story homes and talked across their fences to one another as police vehicles came
