Isn't that just a metaphor for "mafia employee"? I didn't know we had a shortage of those!

Let's look at the one year outcome if these jobs are not filled.
1) Doctor
Year to year most people don't need a doctor. Some do, they die.

2) Teacher
Kids continue to not know how to read or write.

3) Mortician
More needed than before without the doctors.

4) Waste Disposal Manager
Watch out for the trash piles, especially without morticians.

5) Scientist
Science takes a year off.

6) Tax Collector
The lack of doctors is offset by the improvement in general health by the rampant dancing in the streets.

7) Barber
70's hair styles make a comeback.

8) Military Soldier
None for any country? The war has been postponed.

9) Religious Leader
Maybe there won't be a war at all.

10) Law Enforcement Officer
Hi everyone!

11) Farmer
Everyone starves to death.

12) Construction Worker
No need, everyone's already dead.

So... I disagree with their rankings more than just a little.

These lists never make any sense and always infuriate me. I can certainly live without a few of the jobs on the list but I can't have the peace and safety I treasure everyday, without police officers and the military. (And I thank you for that.)

I disagree with the rankings more than a little too.

I found the poem I was looking for and the thread it was located in...

http://www.officerresource.com/...ead.php?t=9005

If There was NO officer in blue

Imagine how our world would be If every police officer quit

Turned in their gun, turned in their badge,

Just finally had enough of it. No respect, no loyalty,

No appreciation of all they do

They’d give their lives for all of us

These wonderful officers of “Blue”

Kicked at, spit on,

Punched, stabbed and shot

Everyday assaults on officers

Done….without thinking a second thought!

Our laws are in favor of criminals

There’s always some loophole in their case

Out again to commit more crimes and murders

…creates pain, that we, the family and friends

…in time will never erase.

Why should they do it?

Why take the risk?

Why put their life on the line?

Subject their loved ones to endless suffering

When their precious life is lost while fighting crime.

More murders, more kidnappings, more robberies and rapes

Just to mention a few

Please ask yourself how life would be

If there were NO officers in Blue!

Would you do it? Could you do it?

And for how many…..would YOU give it all

Rewards are a 21 gun salute, a Medal of Honor

And your name gets added to the Wall!

Think about it. Why are they here?

And why do some hate them so?

Because they enforce the laws that put convicts and murderers

In jail serving time or on “Death Row”

All give some and some give all

It's a risk they chose to take:

To put their heart and soul in it,

To put their lives at stake

So, please take a moment

Please give it deep thought

Think of what "you can do"...

To help show respect

to help follow the laws

So we'd quit losing our Heroes in Blue!

Oops, I misread it as one of those "professions that will suffer shortages and need more people" lists.

Actually I think cops, soldiers, and farmers are the only truly necessary ones. If we get bombed back to the stone age, it will be just like it was 10,000 years ago, and every able-bodied adult man will be simultaneously a farmer, a cop, and a soldier. Every able-bodied adult woman will be a farmer and homemaker, and in the absence of birth control will give birth every other year, to replenish all the people who will be dying young in the absence of technology. Every family would experience some infant mortality, and many women would die in childbirth. I wonder if our ancestors were as unhappy as I would imagine them to have been, or if they were actually happier than us.

I'm glad to live in the 21st century USA, and hope the no bombs go off anytime soon.

You're right we need to have these jobs. I understood that, what I don't like is that police officer was ranked no. 10. Maybe that doesn't make a difference but why is a barber more important than an officer? The rankings is what I have a problem with.

It doesn't say they are ranked by importance.

It's just a list.

And btw, firefighters aren't on the list, because firefighting is nearly an obsolete profession.

With sprinklers, alarms, heat/fire resistant building materials, fire extinguishers, etc, etc, etc nowadays, fire's aren't half as common as they used to be.

do you know how hard it is to find a good barber.

i get my hair cut once a week, and ive had the same barber for 3 years...there is nothing better than walking in, sitting down, and having your barber know exactly how to cut your hair without having to ask you.

if my hair is not fresh and bad ass, i cant handle calls for service.

If Insurance had made firefighters and police obsolete because everything is disposable and replacable (I guess that's why Mortician is #3)...

Someone tell me why Insurance Salesmen aren't at the top of the list

Nope

But seriously....look at how things have progressed. Structure fires are rare, compared to 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 years ago....

Crime will always be there.

So will fire...but it's less and less every year.
