I suffer from the same compulsion

Windows guys will always try and kill procs, but the tests actually show that ATK can slow down your phone more than it helps you. I gather this is because the phone is constantly using resources to turn back on things you shut off, rather than waking them from sleep state.

Linux just doesn't handle resources the way Windows does.

Like you, I still find it useful - there are apps that do not enter sleep state and there are apps with no apparent way to shut them down.

I'm ready to tear off the MP3 from my phone. It keeps eating resources I'm short of.

In other news have you seen the Samsung Galaxy S? It's supposedly 4 times faster than the 1ghz Snapdragon. It has a separate GPU I think and it's rendering is amazing. Super AMOLED screen too. It's coming out this summer so it may be my next phone in the fall.

Any sign of 2.1 on your Droid yet?

As the hardware keeps improving the OS is really going to take off. When you look at what they are already doing and working on it's really incredible how far it's come in a short amount of time. A year ago now the G1 was the only Android available in the US...

No, Verizon won't say when it is due - apparently there is some bug.

I did find out something you might like - Astro File manager has a process viewer that actually shows you the percentage of CPU an app or process is using.

I discovered the background processes were listed at 0%.

I just had a thought. I may buy the Droids on Saturday and hold on to them until my AT&T contract runs out. That way I can get the buy one get on free and avoid the contract buy out. I will just have to be patient for three months.

That might work, but I think you'll end up paying for service on them even if you put them away.

Your Verizon contract is going to start as soon as you get the phones, might as well use them. You also have 30 days with verizon to exchange the phones for something else if you don't like them. Verizon has had several "Buy One Get One" deals the last few months, there will be another along soon, probably involving the Incredible or Nexus anyway.

I'm not worried about CPU usage, I'm concerned about them taking up the memory. I only have about 20-24 MB free with what I normally have running. When the phone bogs down to about 15 it becomes unusable and locked up.

192 MB RAM / 512 MB ROM

The issue for me is limited space to run a bunch of apps simultaneously. I have a few that I like running all the time with widgets. When other stuff like Amazon MP3 starts itself and uses that memory it can really start effecting performance. It's a necessity for me to shut them down.

In the fall/winter I anticipate moving and having to switch carriers and I'll get something bigger and faster. This phone is essentially the G1 without the keyboard so it's slightly better than first gen Android. The stuff coming out now is rocking Android.

Ass! :P For what it's worth, the BB in that video is a shitpile with outdated software. It took forever just to start receiving the page, let alone render it. Mine loaded that page right up in the same time it took for the Droid. That being said, it's a well known fact even among Crackberry users that the browser is a POS. I defintely concede that the Droid's browser is light years ahead.

That being said, I also have some Google Voice invites if anyone needs any. Just let me know!
