There are so many great tangents to this, and technology has several obvious ones. The social network of the time was a face to face system and telephone was a rather new instant messenger only a few had.

It's easy now to make fun of those who panicked during this broadcast. That's not why I love it. I love how close families were then, how close they necessarily had to be then for each city exodus to happen. I don't mock them - I envy them.
