I've had enough
I am in the process of typing my resignation letter for the town of Oakland. I've had enough. You would think being Chief in a town of 600 wouldn't be that bad, but guess again.
I'm tired of fighting the mayor, I'm tired of fighting the board, and I'm tired of the law not applying to their friends and relatives. It's a well known fact in this area that the only reason Oakland wants a police department in the first place is so it can keep its corporation charter. Screw 'em.
I am already a part time officer in another town, a freelance security guard, and the Sheriff has told me he would hire me back as a deputy. So I'm gone.
Two of the three officers who work for me part time are also deputy sheriffs, and the other one is a reserve deputy. All three have told me they are not remotely interested in becoming chief.
This should be interesting.

I have a good friend that did the same thing, brother. Try not to burn any bridges, but I would get gone as soon as you could. Don't stick around long enough for them to get a smear campaign going.
P.S.- My friend is a lot happier working the SO, too.

Brothers and sisters,
I appreciate the support you have shown me. I turned in my resignation yesterday. I have yet to speak with the mayor. The board meeting next week should be interesting.
The SO is chomping at the bit for me to come back, especially the ones who work for me part time at Oakland. On the other hand, you should see the jaws of the people in Oakland drop when I tell them I'm going back to work for the SO.
They know I believe life is too short to hold grudges, but they also know I am going to do my job, regardless of who their cousin is.

When it comes to doing my job, business is business. Asking me to drop a DUI 2nd on a 22 year old because her grandfather is a judge in the next county is going too far.
My 3 pet peeves: DUIs, dope, and small children not in the safety seat.
