The man who would become the Rhino was a small time muscle man who worked miscellaneous jobs for professional criminals. At one point in his career he was employed by a group of professional spies with allegiance to no country. His employers chose him to be the subject of an experiment to develop a superhumanly powerful assassin. They selected him because of his muscular physique and a low-order intelligence, which they believed would insure his loyalty. he was subjected to several months of chemical and radiation treatments which ultimately granted him superhuman strength. A team of specialists developed a material of extraordinary toughness and coarseness, like a rhinocerous's hide, and fabricated a skin-tight suit out of it. He was given the code-name Rhino. His first mission was to abduct John Jameson, son of Daily Bugle publisher J. Jonah Jameson and an astronaut in the United States Space Program, for the purpose of "sale" to the highest bidding nation. The Rhino's new sense of self-assuredness led to open resentment of his treatment at the hands of his employers and he turned on them, destroying their headquarters. The Rhino then attempted the Jameson kidnapping under his own initiative.
Spider-Man intervened and defeated the Rhino during the attempt. The Rhino was then placed in a special state correction hospital where he was kept under heavey sedation. After only a few weeks, during an accidental period of lucidity between doses of sedative, the Rhino broke out of the hospital and escaped. He then sought Spider-Man, intent upon revenge. Spider-Man again defeated him, using a specially-formulated version of his web fluid, devised with the aid of Dr. Curt Connors (see Lizard), that contained encapsulated acid pellets whose containers dissolved upon contact with the air. The special webbing rendered the Rhino's costume weak and brittle, which deprived him of needed impace resistance. The Rhino was recaptured, tried, and convicted.
The Rhino served a commuted sentence and was discharged. When he was released, the spies who had created him, apparently bearing no malice over his previous betrayal, approached him with the offer to re-make him into a more powerful being using a gamma-ray process. They also devised an improved, acid-resistant material suit. Having no prospects of gainful employment and with revenge against Spider-Man as motivation, the Rhino accepted the offer. The new series of radiation treatments were successful. The augmented Rhino's first mission was to abduct Dr. Bruce Banner, an authority on biophysical gamma-ray experimentation. The spy ring's plan was to coerce Banner into developing an army of gamma-ray treated, superhuman assassins. When the Rhino tried to abduct Banner, Banner transformed into the Hulk and overpowered Rhino. Again, he was sent to a state facility and was kept under heavy sedation and stepped-up guard.
The Rhino's battle with the Hulk came to the attention of the Leader, the Hulk's foremost nemesis, who decided that the Rhino's present state was a starting point for further gamma-ray treatments to enable him to overcome the Hulk. The Leader freed the Rhino from the state facility, further increased his strength and on two separate occasions, the last time controlling the Rhino's body with his own superior mind, experienced crushing defeat by the Hulk.
Since then, the Rhino has operated on his own and menaced society several times. He is presently under the employ of a sponsor in the "Great Game" as a player who battles other super-powered opponents for personal profit and entertainment of the sponsors.
