Close call on a shooting
Today, about 1900 hrs.,one of my best friends, Sgt. Lee Kerzic, Birmingham Police Department, AL was responding to an altercation with a suspect who had shot his wife five times earlier in the day. About four officers responded to a residence where the suspect was thought to have escaped to. When the officers arrived, a family member let the officers inside. Once inside, the suspect lunged at the officers with a knife. The suspect was shot five times, but then got up and lunged again. The suspect went down in a hail of bullets and was DOS. However, during the shooting, Sgt. Kerzic was shot in the back. Since the suspect only had a knife, it was apparently friendly fire. This was all the info I had at the time I received a phone call. ( I was off duty).
As I was typing this, his Lt. called me at said the bullet went straight through his side, and he is going to be okay. He should be released in the morning. Thank God. Please keep him in your prayers.

The first question we asked was, "Did he have a vest on?" because he rarely wore one in the past. However, when his Lt. called, he said Sgt. Kerzic did have his vest on, but the bullet missed it somehow. Thanks for your prayers and wishes!
