This is where I will share our gardening madness.

We are in zone 5a (National Gardening Association) and have been gardening at this location for over 10 years.

The plan

Potatoes (4 varieties)
Greens (lettuce, spinach, chard, collards, mustard, beets)
Tomatoes (3 or 4 varieties)

hot peppers ( 3 varieties)

The sorrel survived the harsh winter. I like this "citrusy" flavor in soups.



The tarragon fared well too. This makes an awesome pesto sauce for fish.

Between planning a wedding, buying a new house, and selling my house...I haven't even bought plants or seeds yet for this year.


I'll be getting a late start on my garden. I doubt I'll even touch it before May 15th.

Look into herbs and rhubarb. Get these established. Check your soil, some greenhouses offer soil analysis.

Cucumbers, radishes, beets should do well if you get the time.


You can still work in a cold frame crop this fall.

I am going to be planting in an old bathtub this year, as well as some smaller containers. The plan is for yellow squash, zucchini, tomatoes, basil, catnip, and some as yet to be determined others. I have oregano, rosemary, and lemon balm year round. I may try planting some blueberry bushes and other perrenials as well.

Silly. The other, smaller containers have a lot to do with volume. And just for that I'm going to send you a pic of my rosemary all decked out in her gorgeous and tasty blooms.

While the seeds in the garden are germinating, I will fill in with some pics of our landscaping.

The main herb garden. There are many herbs throughout the raised beds elsewhere. This is convenient when I am grilling.



This is not rosemary, it is lavender. We will use this in a blend called Herbs De Provence.

I was slave labor in two HUGE gardens from the time I could hold a hoe until I was about 14. I always said I would not do my own garden. If I can't get it at the store or a vegetable stand, I don't need it. I will, however, plant 5-6 Better Boy tomato plants because I love home-grown tomato sandwiches.

I have impatiens, hostas, and lavender in the front of my home. Around the deck in back I have sedums, hostas, and something I can't identify. The only herbs I grow are basil, parsley, rosemary, and mint. I'm not much of a gardener.

I wish I had a garden The closest thing we have is our neighbors' grow operation they probably have going on in their apartment.

The grass is one of my duties. It does not help to have neighbors that love ground ivy and dandelions.

Short police story

We used to have a real problem with rabbits before we befriended two local alley cats. We replanted some veggies 3x. I would come home from work and find little holes dug in the yard.

I bought a bb gun. I was a pretty good shot, plink the li'l buggers in the butt and off they go. Best shot, direct hit, standing in basement with both back doors open, hitting rabbit 15 ft out the back door. (There are also many one shot/kill notches too.)

One afternoon I caught a rabbit digging in the grass out in the parking area. I barely opened the front door and plinked the li'l bugger and off he went. I retired for the evening and got one of my world famous "mason jaritas" and called a friend to boast of my safari. Then the doorbell rang. I walked to the front door and there were two police cars and three police officers. I told my friend I would get back to him. The first office stepped up to the door and said they had a report of a person with a shotgun. I lol'd and told them what had happened. I take a lot of pride in my lawn/landscaping. Two of the officers laughed while the third read me the riot act. As they left, the two lolly officers looked at each other and commented on how awesome my lawn and landscaping looked.

I usually have a quarter acre to a half an acre planted. I have to hook the tractor up to the tiller to get rid of the weeds from winter. I've been holding off since it has been snowing off and on. One thing I will NOT plant are tomatoes. I hate the things

One of my friends has something she calls "Scarborough Faire Chicken" that yes, has parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. I like it but it needs some spice to go with the herbs.
