Recidivism and the criminal justice system

What idea's do you have for reducing recidivism in the criminal justice system? Do you think a method for reducing recidivism in DWI cases would be just as effective in reducing recidivism in burglaries? sex crimes? petty thefts?

For the property crimes prison time that sticks. Build more prisons that give others a good career. Over crowding should not be an issue. Protecting the people is a fundamental task of government, period.

DWI should cost you tons of money for the first offense and time for anything after that.

Ah, the million dollar question. Lots can be said on this topic. One idea, though it's up for debate, and I recognize both sides of the issue, but drug users should receive better treatment. Yet, there is the the problem of giving treatment to those who want treatment.
