Their extraordinary work is well known locally. Over the years, they have given over $100,000 in scholarships to people who needed training, but couldn’t afford it. Their selfless commitment and dedication to the law enforcement profession is now being recognized nationally.

Philip Messina and Elizabeth Kennedy of the Lindenhurst, New York training institute, Modern Warrior, were awarded the prestigious “Civilian Service Award” by the Federal Law Enforcement Foundation at a ceremony last October in New York City. Former President Bill Clinton was the keynote speaker, and dignitaries from law enforcement, government and private industry were on hand to honor Messina and Kennedy. Vice Admiral John Cotton, who presented the awards, said, “These people are the best of the best.”

The Federal Law Enforcement Foundation is a nonprofit organization that recognizes the accomplishments of federal law enforcement officers. This is the first time in the organization’s 18-year history that a retired law enforcement officer – Messina is a highly decorated former officer with the NYPD – and a civilian – Kennedy – have been recipients of an award from the Foundation.  Modern Warrior is a school which provides training to law enforcement and civilians.“This is quite an unexpected honor,” Kennedy said. “I hope that this award will encourage others to show their appreciation for the law enforcers who put their lives on the line.”
