AWARDS DAY. (L to R) Officer Maria Franco holding little Isabelle, the heroic nanny, Parbattie Ramroop, grateful mom Sarah Lesser-Avins and Officer Victor Matos.
For a street cop, there's no better feeling than helping a kid in trouble. And despite the fact that two NYPD officers were receiving awards for heroism, little Isabelle Avins was all the reward anyone needed at the recent "Finest of the Finest" ceremony. Last September, a madman stabbed little Isabelle as her nanny pushed her stroller. The nanny tried to rush the child to the hospital, but she wasn't sure she would be able to get the kid to the ER in time. Then, like a gift from God, she saw two cops. Victor Matos and his partner, Officer Maria Franco, jumped into action. They grabbed the infant from the nanny and ran through heavy traffic on foot to get the baby to the hospital. Little Isabelle squealed with joy as she watched her saviors receive their commendations. But the girl's survival is the real reward.
"It's God's gift," said Police Officer Victor Matos. "She's great. You look at that and it motivates you." "They stayed by my side the entire night of the incident and would not leave it no matter how late the hour," said Sarah Lesser-Avins, Isabelle's grateful mom. "Their actions and quick thinking saved this baby's life."
During a recent ceremony, the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association handed out awards to Officers Franco and Matos as well as 40 other New York City police officers who had gone beyond the call of duty. "The heroism we're talking about here is real," PBA President Patrick Lynch said of the award-winners, who were selected by their fellow officers. Lesser-Avins said she wanted to make sure the other hero of the day - the nanny, Parbattie Ramroop - was remembered. The loyal caregiver fussed over little Isabelle throughout the awards ceremony and gave the police the description that led to the arrest of the perpetrator. "She helped us to catch this guy," Franco added. "She actually was the one that gave me the description.”Add this page to your favorite Social Bookmarking websites
