Firefighters to write tickets E-mail
Written by Mark Nichols

Why are firefighters in Oak Ridge Tennessee now able to issue $25 parking tickets in their capacity as designated "special police officers" under a resolution approved by local officials recently?
Seasoned observers say it’s probably because it’s easier to layoff public safety professionals if you can convince taxpayers that they’re all the same and that it’s cheaper to hire one guy that wears two hats than two guys with their own hats.

According to a recent article in the Knoxville News-Sentinel, training sessions for members of the Oak Ridge Fire Department in the proper procedure for issuing citations will be conducted soon, according to Fire Chief Darryl Kelley. Firefighters can play traffic cop about 30 days later.

The measure is part of a "Not in Our City" campaign, a general effort to improve Oak Ridge that includes a new ordinance tightening guidelines involving on- and off-street parking.

Kerley said that after they are trained, firefighters will be able to issue parking tickets in instances where motorists have parked in fire lanes at businesses as well as next to fire hydrants.
