Toledo loves their cops E-mail

At a recent public hearing in Toledo, a parade of people showed up to testify about their police department. Probably no one was more surprised than the cops themselves, when every person who spoke had nothing but nice things to say about the officers who work for the Toledo, Ohio P.D.

The hearing was held by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies and was part of the department’s re-accreditation process.

Toledo P.D. Chaplain Larry Vriezelaar shared an emotional account about a fatal fire where a four-year-old girl and her mother died.

The girl’s grandmother asked Mr. Vriezelaar to pray over the deceased. Officers from the police and fire departments went into the burned apartment and prayed alongside the chaplain.

“The officers, who are great at what they do, were wiping tears from their eyes,” Vriezelaar said.

Lucas County Sheriff James Telb said, “I’m proud of the officers; I am proud to say that’s my police department.”

Morris Jenkins, chairman of the University of Toledo’s Department of Criminal Justice and Social Work and associate professor in criminal justice, said he is a tough grader, and the department should receive a B-plus."

That is a great grade coming from me,” he said.

Jenkins noted the department is considered a part of the community and does not have an “us-versus-them” mentality.
