Tip and tricks for cops by cops E-mail

Who among us has not had this happen to them? You bring a prisoner to the station but before you enter the holding area, you have to secure your weapon in a gun locker. You then begin the booking process, check for warrants, start the report etc.  All of a sudden you hear, "Code 33! Unit needs backup!" on the radio.

You run out of the station and rush to the scene only to discover that in your hurry to get to there, you left your weapon in the gun locker back at the station.

Here's a little tip that's helped me avoid making that mistake ever again.

Whenever I have to secure my weapon in a gun locker, I also put my car keys in there at the same time.

This way, if you should run out of the station, the moment you realize you can't get into the car, you'll also be reminded that you don't have your weapon.

Works for me.

Been there...

I've been there. Transported the suspect to the main jail, all the while leaving my weapon at the station. I started securing my equipment in the trunk of my unit, along with the unit keys. Then I use my spare key to get into the trunk before I leave. Same concept...it's very helpful. Won't make that mistake again.
