As a longtime member of the NYPD's elite Emergency Service Unit, as well as a licensed physician's assistant, Det. Dennis Canale is used to saving lives. Those dual skills were never put to better use than in November 2008, when he saved the life of retired Det. Greg Boyle, who while working as a security guard had been shot and wounded during a robbery at a jewelry store located inside the Waldorf Astoria hotel.
When Canale saw air bubbles accompanying the blood oozing out of the victim's chest, he realized the lung was affected. Without any hesitation, he put his finger in the bullet hole so the lung cavity wouldn't collapse and compress the heart. As he did so, another responder told the wounded man, "Don't worry, ESU is here." Boyle said those were the most reassuring words he's ever heard in his life. Now Canale is the one who needs assistance. His three-year-old son Christopher was diagnosed with stage four brain cancer in April. Although the tumor was successfully removed by surgery, he still requires months of chemotherapy and radiation. Because of Christopher's young age, he is going to need Proton radiation therapy, which is only given at six locations throughout the United States. Only 25 percent of the expensive treatment is covered by insurance. Canale's colleagues at ESU Truck 5 have organized a fundraiser, scheduled for October 28 at Bootleg Mannings, 2645 Forest Avenue, Staten Island, NY 10303. Tel: 718-981-4988. In the meantime, T-shirts can be purchased for $10 and all proceeds will go to the Canale family. Anyone wishing to make a donation should make out a check to: Dennis Canale and mail it to Paul DiGiacomo, Treasurer, Detectives Endowment Association, 26 Thomas Street, New York, NY 10007.
