Border fence recycling E-mail
Written by Mark Nichols

In a story so thick with irony that it's actually hard to believe, scrap metal thieves are stealing the border fence and selling chunks of metal plate for scrap. United States Border Patrol agents recently spotted an organized group that appeared to be tampering with the fence on the Mexican side just over a mile west of the San Ysidro port of entry. It's an area known for large volumes of drug smuggling and human trafficking according to Mark Endicott, a Border Patrol spokesman in San Diego.

When the Border Patrol agents approached the group the thieves threw rocks and other debris at them "to keep the agents away from the area," according to Border Patrol spokesman Endicott.

The following day, another group in the same area could be seen next to the fence "attempting to dismantle it," Mr. Endicott said.

Agents dispatched to the scene got the same treatment as the day prior as rocks sailed over the fence, and again the Mexican police were called.

The Border Patrol later learned that Mexican police had had apprehended at least six people believed to be involved.

Tijuana police told local reporters there that the men were planning to sell the torn-off fence parts.

The best part is that the sections of the fence the thieves boosted are largely worthless and made out of scrap metal to begin with.

The part of the fence that was damaged is made of recycled steel landing mats from the Vietnam War era, Mr. Endicott said.
