Most cops that have spent lots of time working road patrols have all kinds of stories about the wild and wacky stuff people say when trying to get out of a speeding ticket. "Officer, I know I was speeding but I'm a doctor and I have to do an emergency procedure and the patient could very well die if I'm delayed!" "O.K. doc, I'll give you an escort. Which hospital?" "Um….. the one, you know…Aw crap! Just write me up." But to do try and dupe police by claiming your some kind of Jack Bauer, the fictional CIA operative on the series "24," is really pushing the boundaries of stupidity.
Police in northeast Tennessee say there wasn't much sleuthing required to determine that Scott Gibson is not in fact the deputy director of the Central Intelligence Agency and even if he were, he'd still have to pay the fine.
Last June, a Mount Carmel, Tennessee speed camera clocked the 56-year-old Gibson of Rogersville going 66 mph in a 55-mph zone.
He was sent a citation. Assistant Police Chief Mike Campbell told the Associated Press that Gibson sent back a copy of the citation with a handwritten note, claiming he wasn't subject to local laws or speed zones because he was the deputy chief of the CIA.
Just to be on the safe side police contacted the federal agency.
They never heard of the guy.
He was arrested for criminal impersonation and Campbell said federal charges are also pending.
Campbell can now ponder the wisdom of his master plan to avoid a $75 citation.
