Private prison outfit bails E-mail

According to recent news articles, after a federal court ordered sweeping changes at a troubled juvenile prison in rural Mississippi, the private company managing the prison, GEO Group, is pulling out of the state entirely. A report by the Justice Department describes "systemic, egregious and dangerous practices" at the Walnut Grove Youth Correctional Facility.

According to a recent article in the Kansas City Star, Kansas City officials and police board members acted illegally when they consolidated the city and Police Department’s health insurance plans recently. That allegation is at the heart of a lawsuit filed by the Kansas City Fraternal Order of Police.

Boss struggles with social media E-mail

If you’re a police officer and you have a Facebook account you might want to think about deleting it. That goes for the top cops out there as well. In a recent case of a cop getting jammed up by social media content, a chief in Oklahoma has been forced to apologize after his Facebook posting caused a “minor stir,” according to the Oklahoman newspaper.

Tried and failed to turn himself in E-mail

According to an article by Charlie Le Duff from WJBK in Detroit, the decision to close some Detroit Police precincts at 4:00 p.m. has led to an embarrassing incident where a wanted felon trying to turn himself in was unable to do so. According to police records, Rafael "Ra-Ra" Dean is a three-time felon with a violent history.

Cops get sued and sue back E-mail

According to a recent article in the Chicago Tribune, Ronald Magee sued a half-dozen Chicago police officers back in 2009. Magee claimed that the officers had falsely arrested him a year earlier.
Magee’s federal lawsuit ended with a mistrial. It was eventually dismissed in 2011.

Sheriff warns residents about currently legal drugs E-mail

In Indiana recently, Huntington County Sheriff, Terry Stoffel joined other officials at a public meeting held to warn residents about the dangers of synthetic drugs like bath salts and “spice.”
Stoffel told the audience that K-2/Spice and bath salts are an escalating problem among families in Huntington County.

Every time I read about a police officer’s death my throat tightens and my eyes water. It is an involuntary reaction. As a news guy for more than a decade I have seen death and destruction that most people don’t and wouldn’t want to see. I can keep it together and be professional in my reporting through nearly all of it.
Still a cop’s death touches the little boy deep inside me who will never be able to face the fragility of his own father’s life. You see, my dad is a cop.

In Memphis, Fox 13 news recently reported that there's a copy of the radio broadcast that captured an on-duty cop allegedly having sex in his police vehicle. According to FOX, Sergeant Karen Rudolph says every Memphis Police Officer has two ways to communicate — a shoulder microphone and a console mic in the cruiser.

In an article from the Houston Chronicle that some might need to read twice in order to believe it, Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia has trained the first of what he expects will be hundreds of private security guards who have signed up to “help” deputies apprehend dangerous fugitives, work crime scenes and a wide array of other tasks normally performed by certified cops.
