I need your cruiser!

In Gary, Indiana, a man who told police he feared gang members were chasing him stole a squad car and led police on a chase. Danny Ware, 39, of Winkelman, Arizona was arrested on preliminary charges of auto theft, fleeing, resisting law enforcement, driving with a suspended license and criminal mischief.

According to local police, Ware walked into a Gary police station and said he was afraid that “gang bangers” had followed him from a bus station in Chicago to the Gary bus terminal, according to Gary P.D. commander Samuel Roberts.

Ware asked for a police escort back to the bus station. Roberts said there was no evidence Ware was being followed and added that the officers who talked to Ware were concerned about his mental stability.

Gary Corporal Jeffery Patrick prepared to give the distraught man a ride back to the bus station. But as Corporal Patrick left his car running and locked outside the police station and went inside to talk to people working on the desk, Ware broke the cruiser’s window with a fire extinguisher and drove away, Roberts said.

“One of the desk workers yelled, ‘He just broke your car window,”’ Roberts told reporters. Gary and state police began chasing Ware, pleading over the radio for him to stop.

When Ware saw police had put stop sticks out on the pavement that would have burst the squad car’s tires, he surrendered.

The cops arrested him 40 minutes after he took the car.
