COPS' first retreat to address the needs of affected co-workers was held last year, October 1-4, 2010. The event ushered in a new era for Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.). For the first time in the history of the organization, C.O.P.S. offered law enforcement co-workers affected by a line-of-duty death the opportunity to attend a hands-on retreat to address the trauma and grief they are experiencing because of their loss.
Erin Barnett, the C.O.P.S. Program Planner, didn't know what to expect as the registration forms and brochures were sent out. "For our very first Affected Co-Workers Retreat, we were expecting maybe 20-25 participants to register," said Erin. "When we ended up with 42 men and women at the retreat, we knew we were offering a much-needed program."

As 265 bicyclists arrived at the Pentagon Memorial in Washington, DC, on May 12, 2011, there were tears, hugs, and congratulations on completing the strenuous challenge. The bicyclists were all members of Law Enforcement United, an organization of law enforcement officers who are also bicycling enthusiasts, completing a 3-day, 250-mile journey from Chesapeake, Virginia. This was their second annual journey, named the Road to Hope, which focused on supporting Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) and Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP). Concerns of Police Survivors (C.O.P.S.) was founded in 1984 and is dedicated to helping surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers rebuild their shattered lives through strong peer support... survivors helping survivors. Law enforcement survivors extending their hand to other survivors and saying "Take my hand, I'll pull you up" is the true healing power behind the organization.
Concerns of Police Survivors is the only national organization that provides healing, love, and life renewed to surviving families and affected co-workers of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. C.O.P.S. does that with their "reach out and touch someone" programs. C.O.P.S.' Hands-On Programs include a weeklong camp for children and teens and weekend retreats for adult children, fiancés/significant others, siblings, spouses, in-laws, parents, and affected co-workers. These nine Hands-On Programs are planned each year throughout the summer and fall.
